When sludge contains microorganisms that break down organic contaminants in liquid waste into simpler substances such as water and carbon dioxide, it is then referred to as activated sludge. When raw sewage is mixed with bacteria-laden sludge and then stirred and aerated, activated sludge is also formed as a by-product.
