Advanced Chemical Transport helped a national lab move several oversized loads in New Mexico. The move went very smooth and without any problems on the load, transport and unload to a safe location. This move created its own special challenges from the start requiring oversize load permits with close bridge clearances. The other challenges that we met were containing the Beryllium for transport and the disposal of large, & heavy pieces of machinery, as well as the unload while normal business operations continued. The load consisted of large pieces of decommissioned equipment that were contaminated with beryllium. The weights of the pieces ranged from 4000 to 19,000 pounds. The pieces were placed into specialty containment bags and loaded and on to a drop-deck trailer. The load was transported as an escorted oversize load to the destination where each piece was unloaded with a 40-ton mobile crane in a secured and compacted area. All operations were performed on schedule in a safe, compliant manner.
